About

My window on the past has a long and unique view. Having earned a degree in History from the University of Missouri at Kansas City in 1995, I began working as a professional researcher, authenticator, and appraiser in the Kansas City area, specializing in historical artifacts, art, and antiques. Since this time I have worked in both institutional and private capacities with artifacts that span thousands of years of history, and I remain committed to protecting international cultural antiquities from unethical and illegal trafficking.

In 2010, I joined the International Society of Appraisers, the largest professional personal property appraisal association in the United States and Canada.

The breadth of my experience derives from consulting with museums and galleries, authors and media, as well as working over extended periods with four large regional auction houses with unique specialties – from historical militaria to general collectibles to fine art, antiques and rare books. I also maintain a network of other consultants and appraisers with expertise different my own and will refer to them in order to assure your appraisal meets the highest standards.

Beyond the ISA’s educational requirements, I was also accepted by the Rare Book School at the University of Virginia, where I completed their intensive Principles of Descriptive Bibliography course for books printed between 1450 and 1800.

I have consulted with the Imperial War Museum, London, appeared as a guest lecturer at universities and local colleges, as well as assisted New York Times fact checkers for various articles and programs. I am a frequent speaker at the National World War I Museum at the Liberty Memorial in Kansas City – where for a time I also served on the Board of Trustees and Museum Accessions committee. I have also been heard on the BBC, and I still appear regularly in local, national, and international media regarding fine art and collecting in the United States.

My services include appraisals for fair market value, insurance, non-cash charitable contributions, equitable division, divorce, damage claims, general estate evaluations, estate taxes, and as an expert witness.

I am also an enthusiastic public speaker on a variety of appraisal and history-related topics.

My professional appraisal and consultation repertoire include fine art, decorative and practical art, sculpture, antiques, furniture, porcelain, china, sterling, rare books, antique scientific and quack medical, historical militaria, and all manner of general collectibles.
